Patience, or sabr, is not just a virtue in Islam; it is a core principle that believers are encouraged to integrate into every aspect of their lives. It is mentioned numerous times in the Qur’an and Hadith, underscoring its significance.
In Islamic terminology, sabr can be understood through three main types:
- the patience in fulfilling obligations set by ALLAH.
- the patience in avoiding sins and disobedience
- the patience in accepting ALLAH’s decrees during hardships.
This holistic approach ensures that a believer remains steadfast and maintains a positive attitude in all circumstances.
The Qur’an frequently addresses the virtue of patience. For instance, ALLAH says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:153):
“O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, ALLAH is with the patient.”
This verse not only highlights the importance of patience but also assures divine support for those who practice it.
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) greatly emphasized the value of patience. A well-known hadith from Sahih Muslim reads: “How wonderful is the affair of the believer, for his affairs are all good, and this applies to no one but the believer. If something good happens to him, he is thankful for it and that is good for him. If something bad happens to him, he bears it with patience and that is good for him.” This hadith beautifully illustrates how patience is integral to the believer’s faith and reaction to life’s ups and downs.
